Tips For Seniors Before Flying

Air travel can be hard on the health — especially for seniors.  But taking the following precautions before a trip can help ensure safety and comfort, both during and after a flight, says Steve Barlam, Chief Professional Officer of LivHOME:

  1. Purchase a water bottle after clearing security and bring it on board, then drink often to avoid dehydration.
  2. Get a doctor’s note confirming that you’re required to take any medications you’ll be bringing on board so they won’t be confiscated by security.
  3. Prepare an in-flight medication schedule to ensure that you’re taking your meds at the right times, and with food if needed.
  4. When crossing time zones, check with your doctor about how best to adjust your medication times.
  5. Find out the in-flight meal schedule in advance to time medications accordingly.
  6. Pack compression stockings in your carry-on and slip them on after boarding to help reduce the risk of clots.
  7. Pack a nose and mouth guard or mask in your carry on.  Wear it in-flight unless eating or drinking to help reduce exposure to airborn bacteria that might cause infection.

Great suggestions. And I want to add a couple of things. Be sure to get up from your seat and walk down the aisles a couple of time a hour. But most importantly HAVE FUN
