Air travel can be hard on the health — especially for seniors. But taking the following precautions before a trip can help ensure safety and comfort, both during and after a flight, says Steve Barlam, Chief Professional Officer of LivHOME:
- Purchase a water bottle after clearing security and bring it on board, then drink often to avoid dehydration.
- Get a doctor’s note confirming that you’re required to take any medications you’ll be bringing on board so they won’t be confiscated by security.
- Prepare an in-flight medication schedule to ensure that you’re taking your meds at the right times, and with food if needed.
- When crossing time zones, check with your doctor about how best to adjust your medication times.
- Find out the in-flight meal schedule in advance to time medications accordingly.
- Pack compression stockings in your carry-on and slip them on after boarding to help reduce the risk of clots.
- Pack a nose and mouth guard or mask in your carry on. Wear it in-flight unless eating or drinking to help reduce exposure to airborn bacteria that might cause infection.
