The baby boomer generation is not quite ready to hand over the reigns to the next generations. The action heroes of their day: Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone are now turning 60, as they are reviving their action roles in Die Hard, Indiana Jones and Rocky for the younger generations. Remember, sixty is now the new 50 and 50 is the new 40 and the baby boomers are not at all ready to be put out to pasture – not by a long shot.
The baby boomers are beginning to retire from their active careers,indulgent fast lifestyle and are taking control by getting fit, making healthy choices, traveling and living longer than any previous generation. The boomers are about to totally change our conventional perception of retirement.
However the boomers have a long way to go to get there and they will need a lot of help and a lot of services. The good thing is that the have the money to pay for it, even during the recession. There may be a small pause, but the baby boomers, who accounts for almost 100 million people in North America, will be back with a vengeance.
This will create huge opportunities for both new and exciting businesses in almost all categories. From health care, to travel, to real estate, to self improvement, general wellness, dating and the list is endless.
As they age the baby boomers may begin to feel that they are running out of time trying to do everything they want. The danger of that is that they may start on many things at the same time and only accomplish a very low rate of success. This may lead to disappointment and a feeling of failure, which may then ultimately lead to frustration, loss of self confidence, independence and unwillingness to do anything at all – the proverbial KOD (kiss of death)
However, with planning and persistence nearly anything will be possible for the boomers in their retirement.
The journey into retirement can easily be as or more exciting than anything the baby boomers have done before. And it can be a great business opportunity for the rest of society.
