Dogs and the baby boomers
A lot of baby boomers have a pet and the most common pets are dogs. We have dogs for many reasons, whether it is for our own company or to please a child. Or maybe for another of a thousand different reasons.
Regardless of the reason you have a dog it gives you a lot of happiness and joy. Dogs have this special way of looking at you that is irresistible.
I know that my dog has me wrapped around his “right paw”.
Dogs are a huge part of the pet population, as the following numbers from The Humane Society indicate:
- There are approximately 74.8 million owned dogs in the United States
- Thirty-nine percent of U.S. households own at least one dog
- Most owners (63 percent) own one dog
- Twenty-five percent of owners own two dogs
- Twelve percent of owners own three or more dogs
- On average, owners have almost two dogs (1.7)
- The proportion of male to female dogs is even
- Ten percent of owned dogs were adopted from an animal shelter
- On average, dog owners spent $219 on veterinary visits (vaccine, well visits) annually
- Seventy-five percent of owned dogs are spayed or neutered
We generally see our dog as part of our family and we spend a lot of money on their nutrition and health. We feed them the best food and we take them to the Vet without hesitation. Not to mention buying all kinds of dog products we think make them happy and feel better.
To help you sorting the good from the bad we have listed some worth while products and services below. Have a look and see if you think it will appeal to “your best friend” – there is no charge for looking:

How old are you?
The prices are not based on gender, rather on breed and the reputation of the breeder. A responsible breeder vs. an idiot just trying to make some quick cash.
I would suggest you first go to a local shelter or dog rescue. They are free, they are vaccinated, fixed. Rescue groups will often help you with anything you need before and after you adopt the dog, they will make sure you and the dog are a good match. It’s like getting a free trainer!

You can go to the humane society, breeder, and pet store (be careful of pet stores – usually dogs have a lot of health issues) or you can buy online. Check out www.petfinder.com. They have all sorts of dogs on there. Happy hunting (there are a lot to look through)!

What do you think? Answer below!Question by biologyishorrible: How to teach big dogs to be considerate of small dogs size?
I have a great dane and am getting a small dog (12 pounds). He is very considerate of other dogs when socializing. But- just in case I would like to ask anyone who has a big dog and small dog how they got there big dog to be considerate (not step on, not bite, and to be easy playing) of the small dog. I would like to know about how people taught their big dogs that. Also I would like to ask how to introduce a big dog to a small dog. We are getting our small dog second, since we already have a big dog. Does that make a difference? Thank you.
